City buzz or countryside calm?

🌿 Countryside

What the lesson is about
This C1 lesson invites students to weigh up the realities of urban and rural living — from the energy and opportunity of city life to the calm and isolation of the countryside. The lesson moves from personal reflection to academic reading, asking students to engage critically with research on cities and mental health before forming and defending their own position.
Vocabulary
Two vocabulary sets run through the lesson. The first covers descriptive adjectives for comparing lifestyles: fast-paced, hectic, relentless, serene, isolated, tranquil, vibrant, picturesque, cosmopolitan. The second draws on academic language from the mental health section: correlation is not causation, social segregation, SES (socioeconomic status), reciprocal effect, dose-response relationship, cumulative evidence, increased population density.
Grammar focus: binomials
Students study binomials — fixed pairs of words linked by and that always appear in the same order. The lesson covers a wide set in context (out and about, part and parcel, trial and error, peace and quiet, sick and tired, cut and dried, odds and ends, no ifs or buts, doom and gloom) through matching, gap-fill, and rewriting tasks. A reading text embeds the binomials naturally so students can see how they function in longer discourse.
Speaking and writing
Students compare the two lifestyles in writing using contrast structures (whereas, while, on the one hand… on the other hand, a trade-off between), then prepare a 2–3 minute spoken response describing their ideal place to live, incorporating urban and rural vocabulary, binomials, and at least one contrast structure.
