This C1 lesson uses chaos theory and the butterfly effect as a springboard for exploring mixed conditionals. Students consider how tiny, seemingly insignificant events can have enormous, unpredictable consequences — and use this idea to speculate about how different choices or historical moments might have shaped the world we live in today.

Students work with these phrases in context — predicting video content, completing true/false tasks, and gap-fill exercises — before moving on to grammar.

Grammar focus: mixed conditionals

The lesson focuses on mixed conditionals, which describe a situation where the condition refers to the past but the result applies to the present (past perfect → would/might + infinitive). Students distinguish this structure from second and third conditionals through guided analysis of example sentences such as If Einstein had died in 1905, modern physics wouldn't be what it is today and If Lorenz hadn't entered the numbers incorrectly, we might not know about chaos theory now. A dedicated bonus revision section contrasts second and third conditionals using historical what-if scenarios.
