Work & city life: The restaurant with no waiters

This A1 ESL lesson teaches can and can't together with restaurant vocabulary, framed around a futuristic robot restaurant so beginners talk about ability and everyday dining from the first task.

What students learn

Students build restaurant vocabulary — menu, tablet, customer, waiter, bill — and the key action phrases: order food, choose, pay a bill, bring food, help customers, plus the polite Enjoy your meal! Picture cards with audio give every phrase a clear context.

Grammar focus

The lesson covers can and can't for ability and possibility across positive, negative and question forms. Students practise through a listening task about what two customers can and can't do, gap-fills and personalised questions like Can you pay a bill with your phone?

How the lesson works

A warm-up about favourite restaurants opens the topic, followed by a lead-in on the robot restaurant, vocabulary with true/false, the grammar block with audio, a speaking task where students design their own robot restaurant, a test and homework. Homework includes ordering restaurant actions in sequence and can/can't gap-fills, with instant feedback throughout.
